EAN 8
The European Article Numbering system (EAN) is a superset of UPC and was introduced in 1978.
EAN is the standardized bar code that can be found on most retail products. The EAN is used in POS system that is widespread through the retail environment.
As EAN is compatible with UPC of U.S.A. and Canada and JAN of Japan, it is a universal code used throughout the world.
EAN has two versions, EAN-13 and EAN-8, encoding 13 and 8 digits. EAN 13 symbol contains the same number of bars as UPC version A, but encodes a 13th digit from the character set of the left hand six digits. The 13th digit in combination with the 12th digit defines two flag characters that represent a country code. EAN numbers.
Each country has a coding authority which assigns codes to manufacturers and maintains a central database. The EAN system is under the overall direction of the International Article Numbering Association. Each country using EAN system maintains a separate Article Numbering Association.
EAN has proven successful in retail marketplace. Most retail channels use the barcode system to access database information for each item scanned.
